What Each Tier Actually Covers
Surgical cover pays for: private hospital admission, operating theatre, surgeon's fees, anaesthesia, and hospital stay. That's it. You're not covered for specialist consultations leading up to surgery, or diagnostic tests.
Major medical cover includes: all of surgical, plus specialist consultations, diagnostic tests (imaging, pathology), some allied health (physio, chiropractor), and sometimes outpatient procedures that don't require hospitalisation.
The price difference is substantial. Surgical cover might cost $40/month while major medical costs $80-100/month for the same person.
When Surgical-Only Actually Works
Surgical cover makes sense if you're under 40, have no chronic conditions, and your family history is clear. You're buying catastrophic protection โ coverage for the unexpected major surgery.
Most people in their 20s and 30s who are perfectly healthy will never claim on health insurance. Surgical-only is their economical choice.
Young parents might choose surgical-only to protect against catastrophic events (car accident requiring major surgery, appendicitis) while avoiding the cost of major medical.
The Problem: The Years Before Surgery
Here's where surgical-only falls apart for many people. Most surgical procedures have months or years of specialist management before surgery happens.
Example: A 45-year-old develops back pain. They see their GP, then need a specialist assessment ($350). Then an MRI ($1,000). Then specialist review of the MRI ($350). Only after 6-12 months of testing and review does the surgeon recommend spinal fusion surgery.
With surgical cover: you pay $1,700+ out-of-pocket for all the pre-surgery appointments and tests. You're only covered for the surgery itself.
With major medical: all of this is covered.
The Hidden Cost of Chronic Conditions
The real reason to choose major medical is any ongoing condition. If you have: - Arthritis: specialist review $400/year, potentially diagnostic imaging $1,000+/year - Hypertension: specialist reviews $300-400/year, additional testing - Thyroid disease: endocrinologist consultations $400/year - Asthma or respiratory issues: specialist assessment and review
With surgical cover, you pay all of this yourself. With major medical, it's covered.
